Tips for fighting Other Mesmers
" Get rid of your opponent s energy as soon as possible, and keep using energy-
denying skills to keep it low once it s down. As you ve probably noticed by now, a
mesmer with ten or more energy available is a dangerous creature indeed. You ll
need to be careful here, since your opponent will probably be trying to do the same to
you.

" If interruption is your game, keep your Fast Casting high if you expect to see many
mesmers. Since most mesmer spells cast very quickly, you ll need uncanny reflexes
to interrupt the opponent.
" When facing an interruption mesmer, stick to spells that cast quickly, and try to fake
out your opponent by not casting many spells in a row. Don t forget to attack with your
cane/staff as well assuming your foe doesn t hex you with Clumsiness or Empathy.
" Hex Breaker is an invaluable stance to have versus nearly all of the mesmer themes.
Shatter Hex and Inspired Hex are good general-purpose alternatives.
" If you notice your foe has Illusion of Weakness on, you can drain/inspire/shatter the
enchantment before dealing much damage in order to waste the heal, or if you re set
up for degeneration, you can try to kill the mesmer without actually dealing damage.
" If the other mesmer tries to heal by using Ether Feast on you, quickly use a skill that
will bring your energy below five to deny him/her the healing; Backfire and other
expensive spells are good for this.
" Don t cast more than one time while you have Backfire on you. If you do cast once, be
sure you re casting a spell that will get rid of the hex or kill the mesmer who cast it on
you. :-) Be sure to check how much damage the Backfire hex affecting you is
supposed to deal, though. Some mesmers like to carry Backfire without any ranks in
Domination Magic, just because most casters recognize it and stop casting without
considering that it might not have any attribute points strengthening it. You can try
employing this tactic yourself, if you like.
4.2. PvP Locations
What follows is a list of the various PvP arenas in Guild Wars, with strategic advice
for using the terrain of a given arena to your advantage where appropriate. As previously
noted, your mesmer spells aren't based on projectiles, allowing you many options for
using terrain as cover. Except for the Ascalon, Shing Jea, and Shiverpeak arenas, all of
these arenas are located in the Battle Isles, to which PvP Only characters always have
access. Role-playing characters can access them from the docks in Lion s Arch or the
port connected to Kaineng Center.
4.2.1. Ascalon Arena / Shing Jea Arena
- 131 -
Accessible by only by role-playing characters from post-Searing Ascalon City
(Prophecies campaign) or Shing Jea Monastery (Factions campaign), these newbie PvP
arenas have a maximum level of ten. If you ve just gotten started on your role-playing
character and want to get into the PvP action quickly, these are the places to be. By
clicking Enter Mission in the mission preparation area here, you ll be thrown into a four
versus four (random teams) PvP annihilation match. The last team with members
standing is the winner.
When setting up your skills for fighting here, you probably won t have too many
skills to choose from. When in doubt, keep things basic; check out the Pre-Searing
Wonder Mesmer theme build in this guide s first section if you want to get back to basics.
Regardless of your play style, you may find the hexes Imagined Burden and Backfire
particularly helpful here. Burden will help you avoid enemy warriors, while Backfire will let
you deal heavy damage to enemy casters, who often won t be experienced enough at this
level to know not to cast while it s active.
The pond of tar in the middle of this arena is the main terrain obstacle in the
Ascalon Arena, inflicting a 30% movement speed reduction on anyone who wades
through it. When possible, try luring foes across it while you hit them with hexes.
Likewise, you should avoid wading in it yourself. The hill to one side of the arena also
provides some high ground, which you may want to use to your advantage. Standing
